Woodford party stabbing: Teenagers held on suspicion of murder

Munashe Charles Kutyauripo was stabbed in Woodford
Two 17-year-olds have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a teenage boy who was stabbed after a birthday party in east London.
Munashe Charles Kutyauripo, 16, known as Charlie, was attacked at Ashton Playing Fields following his friend's party at Woodford social club.
Police said the boys were arrested at separate addresses and were in custody.
Detectives are continuing to search for 16-year-old Aaron Alexander Tavares-Gaiete.

The teenager was stabbed outside a social club where the party was been held

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Lawson said Charlie's family had been left "devastated" by his death, and "wanted and deserved answers" about what happened.
His family said in a statement: "We hope that if anybody knows anything, they should come forward and help find whoever did this because to the world he was just a 16-year-old boy, but to us, that was our son taken."
A post-mortem examination found he died from a stab wound to the chest.

Tube door opens between stations on Piccadilly line

A train door opened on a moving Piccadilly Line train on Saturday morning, prompting an inspection of all the trains on the Piccadilly Line.
The door opened as the train approached Terminal 4 Heathrow, where passengers were taken off the service.
The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union said it was the fifth time it had happened in recent weeks.
Transport for London (TfL) said it had carried out checks which showed it was an "isolated incident".
The RMT said some drivers were refusing to work on Sunday due to safety fears.
The ASLEF union also said some drivers were refusing to operate the Tube trains.
TfL said it had met with trade unions to give them full assurance there were no wider safety issues.
The Piccadilly line is operating with delays and some suspensions.

'Ageing fleet'

Pat Hansberry, London Underground operations director, said: "Following an isolated problem with one train door we carried out a full inspection to confirm there wasn't a wider problem, which resulted in some cancellations."
The RMT has previously raised questions about the reliability of the Piccadilly Line trains, which it describes as an "ageing fleet".
A spokesman for the union said: "There are serious questions over the safety of the ageing fleet on the Piccadilly Line in terms of braking systems, wheel flats and brake operation that RMT has been raising for well over a year now.
"There are clearly major safety issues which must not be ignored any longer".

US 'trying to find Americans missing in Baghdad'

US authorities say they are trying to locate a group of Americans missing in Baghdad, officials say.
The three missing people may have been kidnapped by militias, reports the Arab news channel al-Arabiya, citing its own sources.

"We are aware of reports that American citizens are missing in Iraq.
"We are working with the full co-operation of the Iraqi authorities to locate and recover the individuals," a state department official said.

Two climbers killed in Glen Coe

Two men have died while climbing in Glen Coe in the Scottish Highlands.
Police were alerted by two other climbers who found the bodies on Stob Coire nam Beith at 16:25 on Saturday.
Officers directed Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team to the scene and the bodies of the two men were located at about 18:55.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Sadly, the two climbers were found to be deceased. Further details will be released when available."
The leader of the mountain rescue team, Andy Nelson, said an investigation was under way to check for any sign of an avalanche.
Mr Nelson told BBC Scotland: "The guys were roped together so it's possible they were still on the climb, but they've clearly fallen some distance.
"My information is that they've been killed instantly by the fall.
"They had all the relevant equipment, were well-equipped, and there's nothing to suggest that they were ill-equipped or inexperienced."

Bale, Benzema injuries ruin Zidane’s party

Zinedine Zidane’s dream start to life as Real Madrid boss continued as Los Blancos scored four times in the opening 18 minutes on their way to a 5-1 rout of Sporting Gijon on Sunday.
However, Madrid’s joy was tempered as Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema both had to be replaced due to injuries.
Bale limped off with what looked like the recurrence of a calf problem just before half-time having scoring his 11th goal in eight games.
Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo also scored twice in the first-half before the former picked up a knock in a collision with teammate James Rodriguez.
Madrid have now scored 35 goals in six games at home since losing to 4-0 to Barcelona in November.
Victory takes Madrid above Barcelona and to within a point of leaders Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga.
However, Atletico and Barca are in action later when they face Las Palmas and Athletic Bilbao respectively.
“We played very well in the first-half. We were concentrated and up for the game from the start. We prepared well and are happy with how the match went,” said Zidane.
“Karim just has a knock, which isn’t so bad. Gareth is a little more complicated because it is his calf and in his left leg which is a problem.
“He will have a scan tomorrow and we hope it is nothing serious.”
Having thrashed Deportivo la Coruna 5-0 in his managerial bow at the Bernabeu last weekend, Zidane made just one change with Raphael Varane replacing injured captain Sergio Ramos.
Sporting had surprisingly held Madrid to a 0-0 draw on the opening day of the season, but were powerless to stop Real’s rampant ‘BBC’ frontline of Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo early on.
Bale scored his seventh headed goal of the season from Toni Kroos’s corner on seven minutes to get the hosts off to the perfect start.
Ronaldo showed his frustration at not getting on the scoresheet against Deportivo last weekend and made amends moments later by smashing Benzema’s through ball into the roof of the net.
Benzema then produced a special finish of his own as he acrobatically swivelled to volley home Bale’s cross.
And another flowing Madrid move saw Ronaldo sweep home Dani Carvajal’s cross at the near post two minutes later.
There was some brief respite for Sporting as Zidane’s men waited 23 minutes to add the fifth when brilliant play from Isco freed Benzema to roll in his 20th goal in 19 appearances this season.
However, Madrid suffered a setback when Bale pulled up seconds before the break and had to be replaced by Jese Rodriguez for the second period.
Without the Welshman, Sporting managed to restore some pride after half-time and were rewarded when Isma Lopez rounded off a fine team goal just after the hour mark.
Benzema also then had to be replaced after colliding with Rodriguez on the edge of the box, but the Frenchman was able to walk off the field and his problem seems less of a concern than the injured suffered by Bale.
Earlier, Gary Neville’s winless streak as Valencia boss in La Liga stretched to six games in a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to relegation threatened Rayo Vallecano.
Los Che were heavily favoured to end a two-month run without a league win against a Rayo side that has lost six of their last seven league games – conceding 23 goals in the process.
However, they twice had to come from behind as Alvaro Negredo’s sensational strike from just inside the Rayo half and Paco Alcacer’s late equaliser cancelled out goals from Jozabed and Diego Llorente for Rayo.
A point means Valencia remain closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places, still 16 points behind Villarreal in fourth and eight ahead of Rayo.

Buhari ready to meet Jonathan over arms scandal – Presidency

President Muhammadu Buhari
The Presidency has said that President Muhammadu Buhari will be willing to meet former President Goodluck Jonathan to get clarifications on the multi-million dollar arms procurement scandal, which is under investigation.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, stated this in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday.
Our correspondent had asked if Buhari would be ready to grant Jonathan audience if the former President sought to make clarifications in view of the revelations coming from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s probe of the scandal.
Adesina said because of Buhari’s belief in decency and civility, he would not shut out his predecessors, even if some people had done so in the past.
Adesina said, “A former President should always have access to a sitting one. It would be uncouth and indecent to shut out a former occupant of such lofty office. If some people did it to their predecessors in the past, it is not this President who believes in decency and civility.
“Yes, President Buhari will always grant audience to former President Jonathan, if there is any request for such. A rebuff does not come into the picture at all.”
A top government official told our correspondent on the condition of anonymity that the former President had tried to reach out to the National Security Adviser, Babagana Mongunu.
The source, however, said he did not know if Jonathan had succeeded in establishing a contact.
“I know that the former President has been trying to reach the NSA. Whether he has succeeded, I do not know. You can ask the NSA himself,” he said.
It was the NSA, on the orders of the President, who constituted the committee that has audited the procurement of arms and equipment in the Armed Forces and Defence sector from 2007 to 2015.
Most of the information in public domain on the arms scandal is from the findings of the committee, which has submitted two preliminary reports so far.
Based on the finding of the committee, the EFCC has ordered 18 military chiefs to appear before it on Monday.
It was learnt that the commission had sent invitations to some of the Generals and the companies, whose names featured in the report submitted to the President.
Buhari had on Friday directed the EFCC to carry out further investigation into the alleged misconduct established against some retired and serving officers of the Nigerian Air Force and Nigerian Army.
Those affected in the order include embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.); former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (retd.); and two former Chiefs of Air Staff, Air Marshal MD Umar (retd.) and Air Marshal Adesola Amosun (retd.).
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, disclosed the President’s directive in a statement made available to journalists on Friday.
He listed others that the President asked the EFCC to probe to include Maj.-Gen. E.R Chioba (retd.); AVM I.A Balogun (retd.); AVM A.G Tsakr (retd.); AVM A.G Idowu (retd.);AVM A.M Mamu; AVM O.T Oguntoyinbo; AVM T. Omenyi; AVM J.B Adigun; AVM R.A Ojuawo; AVM J.A Kayode-Beckley; Air Cdre SA Yushau (retd.); Air Cdre A.O Ogunjobi; Air Cdre G.M.D Gwani; Air Cdre S.O Makinde; Air Cdre A.Y Lassa; and Col. N Ashinze.
Shehu said the directive was based on the recommendation of the committee established to audit the procurement of arms and equipment in the Armed Forces and Defence sector from 2007 to 2015.
In its first interim report, the Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment established that the sum N643bn and $2.1bn interventions were received for procurements by DHQ and the services between 2007 and 2015.

Man climbs, stays on Lagos high-tension tower for three hours

Gbenga Adeniji
Tragedy was averted in Lagos on Friday when an unidentified man mounted an electricity transmission tower.
The incident occurred at Powerline Street, Calvary Bus Stop in Egbe-Idimu Local Council Development Area.
Our correspondent gathered that the man wandered around the vicinity in the early hours of the day before stopping at the foot of the tower at about 2pm.
Eyewitnesses said he removed some totems tied to the tower by a vigilance group and mounted it to the top despite warnings from residents and passers-by.
A resident, Mr. Kazeem Oyebola, who said the man did not look like a mentally challenged person, added that his responses showed he was on a suicide mission.
He stated, “He was not mad at all. He was coherent when he talked except for some vague statements he made. He had a mission and it was to kill himself for some unknown reasons.”
Also, a yam seller in the area who identified herself as Iya Bose said she was scared when the man in his late thirties climbed the tower.
Another resident, identified as Odunayo, who sells alcoholic drinks in the area, said the man covered himself with a wrapper.
She added that many felt the tower climber wanted cheap publicity or had an intention to “carry out a diabolical assignment particularly as he wore red knickers.”
Our correspondent learnt that the incident attracted a crowd and some of them had to climb the tower to see if they could get him down.
A community leader in the area, Mr. Alao Salami, said when he sensed that the man was not ready to disembark from the tower after about three hours he had to alert the police at the Idimu Police Station.
An official with an electricity distribution firm who did not want his name in print told SUNDAY PUNCH that the only way the man could have survived electrocution was because there was no electricity in the wires.
When our correspondent visited Idimu Police Divisional Headquarters, the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. James Sonekan, refused to comment on the matter.
He said he was not authorised to make an official statement on the matter.

Man Utd's Wayne Rooney (L) celebrates scoring the winner against Liverpool
Wayne Rooney ended an 11-year wait for an Anfield goal as Manchester United snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory at Liverpool on Super Sunday.
An attritional game was heading for stalemate but the United captain reacted fastest 12 minutes from time, thundering home a rebound after Marouane Fellaini headed off the crossbar.
Until that point, David de Gea had kept a rampant Liverpool side at bay with a string of fine saves in the second period, as United struggled to replicate the impressive offensive display from Wednesday's draw at Newcastle.

Siberian woman,71, who lived her entire life in wilderness airlifted to hospital

Agafya Lykova is the last remaining member of a Russian family that took to the woods after her father’s brother was shot by Stalinist soldiers in 1936. As members of a breakaway sect of the Russian Orthodox church, Lykova’s family was subject to harassment and persecution, and so decided to flee far from Stalin’s grasp.
And they succeeded, so isolated were their lives in the wilderness that the family didn’t learn that World War II had occurred until their remote cabin was spotted in the 1970s by a group of geologists.
Agafya, now 71, has continued to live in her isolated cabin despite offers of accommodations in more settled areas.

According to the Siberian Times, the cabin is more than 150 meters up a remote mountainside and subject to brutal winters that even Lykova admits are “unbearable.” Her unusual life, free from almost all 21st- or even most 20th- century modernity has been a source of interest to many in the region, including the Governor of the Kemerovo region where she resides, Aman Tuleyev.
Her early life was barbarically difficult. She grew up without metal, pots or cutlery, and often had nothing to eat but what she could catch in temperatures that plummeted down to minus 40 degrees Celsius.
For the first 35 years of her life, Agafya had no contact with anyone outside her family.
It was only in 1978 that a group of geologists accidentally stumbled across the family, with scientists reporting that Agafya spoke a strange language, 'distorted by a lifetime of isolation'.
Gradually, she came into contact with local authorities, but refused to leave her home despite the hardships.
Her home is frequently raided by hungry foxes and bears looking for food but officials expect her to still go home when she leaves hospital.
In the past, her family has been so hungry and desperate that they were once forced to eat their own shoes.
Tuleyev, who frequently sends Agytha care packages with food and warm clothing, also provided her with a satellite phone for emergencies.

This week, after 70 years that have seen the deaths of her siblings and parents, famines caused by severe weather, and attacks by hungry animals- she finally needed to use that emergency option.
Suffering more than a week with severe leg pain, Ms. Lykova used the phone to call for help, and was airlifted to a hospital in what was probably the most mind-bending first helicopter ride in history.
Doctors have since treated her for cartilage deterioration, and while she remains under observation, many believe she’ll ask to return to her cabin soon.

2-foot-tall newborn tips scales at more than 12 lbs

Ashley and Greg Box welcomed a very big bundle of joy when their son Kasen Michael was born Monday. The newborn baby weighed in at an impressive 12 pounds, 8 ounces and measured a full 2 feet tall.“I couldn’t believe it,” Ashley told KHOU. The Missouri couple wasn’t expecting Kasen until Jan. 18, and the mother said she didn’t think the baby, her second child, would be larger than 10 pounds. His delivery didn’t go as anticipated either.
“We pushed and no progress,” said Ashley, who ended up having a cesarean section at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar, Mo. And while Ashley acknowledges that her son is “huge,” she added that, “To me, he feels small.”
Perhaps it’s the perspective she’s learned from her older son, Blake, 2. The toddler was born weighing 2 pounds less than Kasen but is already wearing the clothes of a 4-year-old. When Blake met his “little” brother, dad Greg said the toddler kissed Kasen, told him that he loved him, and said, “‘Eat baby.’ It was hilarious.”
Kasen’s incredible size isn’t record-breaking, though, rare as it may be in Missouri, where KHOU reports that, according to the state’s Department of Health and Senior Services, only 1.4 percent of babies born in Missouri between 1990 and 2013 weighed more than 9.92 pounds. Guinness World Records identifies the heaviest surviving baby born to a healthy mother, Italy’s Carmelina Fedele in 1955, as weighing 22 pounds, 8 ounces.

Photos: Acid attack survivor becomes the face of a fashion label she created in India

23-year-old acid attack victim, Rupa, has turned an ugly incident in her life and made a beautiful story out of it. In 2008, Rupa was attacked with acid by her stepmother. She dropped her surname after being disowned by her father, who supported his wife over her.

According to Rupa, she had always dreamt of becoming a designer but after the attack, she had to pause her dreams as she walked in shame with a scarf covering her face.
"I always wanted to be a designer but after the attack there was a pause in my life. I was so insecure and embarrassed by my scars I used to cover my face with a scarf. I always hung onto my dream but I never knew that one day it would be possible and I would be launching my own label" she told Dailymail.
Years after, she has been able to conquer her fears as she has launched her own clothing line and is modeling them alongside other acid attack survivors. What an amazing story! See more photos of Rupa and her models

Very Graphic photo: Ritualist behaeds 4 year old boy in Osun state

Operatives of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, (FSARS), Osun State Command have arrested a member of a gang of ritual killers, 25 year old Ganiyu Tajudeen for killing and beheading a four-year-old boy identified as Bakare Teslim.  Graphic picture after the cut...

Tribune reports that Ganiyu in connivance with other member of his ritualistic gang namely Aremu Moshood (48), Agboola Abdulwasiu (31) and Ganiyu Abidoye (60), lured little Bakare from his parent's home under the pretext that they wanted to buy him groundnut and then proceeded to kill him and behead him in Iragbiji, the headquarters of Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State.

Police sources say the matter came to the open after Bakare did not return with Ganiyu who promised to buy him groundnut. When Bakare's father, Ismail, sought to know his son's where about, Ganiyu denied that he ever saw the little boy. His claim was however contradicted by an elderly woman who lived in the same compound with Bakare's father who said she saw Ganiyu take the young boy out.

The matter was reported to the office of the FSARS and through intensive interrogation, Ganiyu confessed to have taken the boy to an unknown destination with the sole aim of using him for money ritual. He said that himself and his gang members had cut off Bakare's head and buried it in a shallow grave and then threw his body within the same vicinity and buried it with leaves
Ganiyu while confessing said
“I am a palm fruit cutter. The mother of the body came to my house to tell me that she would need my services to cut palm fruits, asking me to come the following day. But I went to her house at about 5.30p.m same day. I took the young boy with me, with the belief that no one noticed when he was going with me. I bought N20 worth of groundnut for him before taking him to my house at Iyana Olofa.”
Ganiyu initially claimed that he got Bakare at the prompting of his partner, Moshood, who had earlier asked him to bring the urine, blood and hair of a young boy when he went to Moshood for money ritual and for protection. The suspect added that he went to Abdulwasiu for the same ritual and he also asked him to bring a boy. Ganiyu also indicted his father, Abidoye, in his statement, saying that he was the one also told him to kill a boy and bury his body so that his acts would not be exposed.

He told the police that he took the deceased to Olokede bush where he cut his head with a knife and buried it, while he threw the body away. Investigations showed that Ganiyu had once been arrested in 2012 for stealing a child at Otapete area of Iragbiji. He was said to have been beaten and macheted by indigenes of the town before he was taken to the police station, while the rescued boy was returned to his parents. Ganiyu was eventually charged to court and spent seven months in Ilesa prison.

Ganiyu and his other accomplices have been dragged before an Osogbo magistrates’ court on a four-count charge of conspiracy, kidnapping, murder and unlawful and intentional killing of Teslim Bakare. The suspects, whose pleas were not taken by Magistrate B.B Idowu Ajao, ordered that the suspects be remanded in prison till February 18th for the next hearing on the case.
