Police, DSS call for postponement of Edo election

The Nigerian Police Force and th Department of State Security DSS, have called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the Saturday September 10th governorship election in Edo state for security reasons. The security agencies made the call at a joint press briefing at the DSS Headquarters in Abuja today September 7th.

According to the spokesman of the police, DCP Don Awunah and his DSS counterpart, Tony Okeowo represented by Garba Abdullahi, credible intelligence available to them indicates that there may be a terror attack during next week's Sallah holidays, especially in Edo State. ‎

The police spokesperson, Don Awunah, in a statement he read during the conference said it is in the light of the intelligence gathered that they make the appeal for the postponement of the election.

“The Nigeria police and the DSS wish to inform the general public that credible intelligence availed to the agencies indicate plans by insurgent/extremist elements to attack vulnerable communities and soft targets with high population during the forthcoming Sallah celebrations between 12 and 13 September, 2016. Edo state is among the states being earmarked for these planned attacks by the extremists elements. It is in regard of this that we are appealing to INEC, which has legal duty to regulate elections in the country, to consider the need for possible postponement of the date of the election in Edo state in order to enable security agencies deal decisively with the envisaged terrorists threats. While the police/DSS remain mindful of the inconveniences this request may cause the various political stakeholders, it is our strong resolve that security agencies need not be distracted from ensuring a peaceful and secure Nigeria now and always”he said

NAN MD, Bayo Onanuga, says shouts of hardship under Buhari may be mere propaganda

Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria NAN, yesterday expressed doubt over the shouts of hardship many Nigerians are complaining of. According to him, this could be mere propaganda as research carried out by him shows that life is not as hard as many Nigerians say it is.‎ On his Facebook page, he wrote:

'My daughter was on the Virgin Atlantic Flight that took off from Lagos to London today. I asked her to find out whether the plane was filled up or going to London near empty judging by the noisy campaign from a section of the country about the 'hardship' in our country. My daughter sent back this one-line text, after boarding: "daddy, the flight was filled up o".  ‎This makes me to wonder whether all the seeming orchestrated campaign in the media was not mere propaganda to make the Buhari regime look really bad. I was in Bauchi and Jos at the weekend, I also found that food was cheap everywhere. In our hotel, we paid about N700 for a plate of semovita, or eba with a choice of cat fish or chicken. On the roadside, I found to my surprise that with just N1000, I bought over 50 oranges, two giant water melon and 10 pieces of sweet potato. I had experienced a similar thing in the market at Abuja, where I found that with N1,400, I could make a big vegetable soup, with tomato, pepper and roasted Titus fish. Are the media and bloggers really painting a correct image of our country. It's time for the media to objectively conduct a reality check about our reports, whether we are not over sensationalising so-called hardship that we talked about.'.

Supposed full story of the man allegedly brutalized by soldiers in Edo State

The story was shared yesterday here but there's a slightly different version of events that was sent in by someone who claims to know the victim and witnessed the assault. Read after the cut...

Yesterday, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria visited Edo state for a grand campaign of the All Progressives Congress`. The entire city was locked down as several access roads were blocked. A citizen by the name Solomon Idiogbe, a former State Chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria, Edo State Chapter was driving along Ibiwe/Isekhere Street and got held up in a traffic lock-jam, an army officer who was wearing mufti came to meet him and asked him to move backward which he argued that there is a commercial bus behind him, that the officer should ask the bus behind to move backward first. Upon saying that, the officer became furious and dealt him blows and slaps, further threatening to deal with him, he went further by trying to handcuff him, which Idiogbe resisted while still on the car. Let it be noted that, the President never used that road and could not have used it owing to the terrible state of the road The next that the army officer did was to start calling his colleagues who arrived at the scene in a commando style shooting sporadically into the air. They all descended on him using the butts of their guns, kicks and even wooden planks on him. He was forced to swim in the gutters. When they were done with the brutality, they took him to the 4 Mechanized Brigade and another round of beating resumed there and even threatened to shot and thereafter label him terrorist that attempted to kill the President, they accused him of attempting of killing Mr. President, cultist and several unsubstantiated accusations. A search party was formed to look for him, they went to the Brigade headquarters and the gate keepers denied knowledge of such, the Airforce Base was also visited which denied same. It was later he was let go when the Army PRO was called by the Coordinator General of Edo Civil Society Organisations to draw his attention to the incident. This is a pure violation of a Nigerian's right for no offence committed save that he drove on Nigeria's road which was constructed by his tax money. This is an abuse of Human Rights in the 21st century by the military and in a democratic Nigeria. WHERE IS OUR FREEDOM? WHERE IS OUR DEMOCRACY? IT COULD BE SOLOMON IDIOGBE TODAY, WHO KNOWS WHOSE TURN IT IS TOMORROW. SOLOMON IDIOGBE NEEDS JUSTICE!
